What is Somatic Experiencing™?

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is body-oriented, naturalistic, and neurobiological approach to foster healing of traumatic- and other stress-related experiences that is based on the theory developed by Dr. Peter Levine in the 1970s, that our nervous system has an innate capacity for self-regulation, provided we give it the support it needs. SE can help an individual dealing with the problematic (and oftentimes physical) experiences associated with trauma and stress. As per Somatic Experiencing® International, “SE resolves symptoms of stress, shock, and trauma that accumulate in our bodies. When we are stuck in patterns of fight, flight, or freeze, SE helps us release, recover, and become more resilient.”

By focusing on restoring self-regulation by releasing this pent-up “survival energy”, Somatic Experiencing may provide relief of emotional and bodily stress which has become trapped within the autonomic nervous system following a traumatic or stress-related experience.
