What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Rapid Desensitization Therapy, also known as EMDR, has been proven effective over the past 30 years in helping people recover from trauma, anxiety, panic disorders, PTSD, and depression.  Many people with traumatic experiences find it difficult to talk in detail about the distressing issue. The good news is that EMDR therapy does not require talking in detail about the experience or completing any homework between sessions.

Rather than focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, sensations, or behaviors resulting from the distressing issue, EMDR therapy allows the brain to resume its natural healing process.

Most times, our traumatic experience can be managed and resolved in the moment while other experiences may not be processed without help from a trained EMDR therapist.

Fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses are known as stress or trauma responses. When distress from a disturbing event remains, the upsetting images, thoughts, and emotions may create feelings that overwhelm, of being back in that moment, or of being “frozen in time.” EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories, and allows normal healing to resume. The experience is still remembered, but the trauma or stress response from the original event is resolved.

I support children and adults who have experienced a variety of different traumas, including:

  • Bullying

  • Community violence

  • Intergenerational trauma

  • Medical trauma

  • Natural disasters

  • Near-death experiences

  • Sexual abuse

  • Traumatic grief

  • Vicarious trauma
